Transformer Monitoring System
Fundamental aspiration of any DISCO is to appease its customers by its performance and reliability. There are state of the art monitoring and control mechanisms installed in power grids which play vital role in keeping utility’s power system up and running. Distribution transformer is another critical and valuable component in power system especially in distribution grids as it is the source of supply to consumer. Consequently, it is prone to different kind of faults and problems.
To achieve an appropriate level of safety and reliability in power grids, real time monitoring of the grid is considered as an essential requirement. In the existing distribution system of DISCOs there is no protection for a distribution transformer other than D-Fuse which is unfortunately, not properly implemented in the field. As per survey, more than 80% of breakdown in field is being faced in 100 & 200 KVA transformers which indicates the necessity of an adequate protection. Real time monitoring of distribution transformer will enable the utility to monitor critical electrical parameters i.e. voltage, current, harmonics, active, reactive and apparent power, power factor, ambient temperature, etc.
Core Features of TMS
KBK Electronics under its vision to be an end-to-end solution provider for DISCOs, has crafted a masterpiece which not only monitors but also protects the distribution transformer against number of hazards and abnormities. KBK’s GSM/GPRS based transformer monitoring/protection system (TMS) is equipped with a MCCB which automatically isolates the transformer from load side under fault conditions. TMS is capable to uphold the distribution transformer under following faults.
- Over Voltage
- Under Voltage
- High Apparent Power
- Over Loading
- Phase Over Current
- Current Unbalance
- Voltage Unbalance
- Short Circuit
KBK’s TMS is supported by series of tailored Web and android applications which make it stand apart from all other solutions present in the market. Utility can not only monitor its valuable asset at click of a button anytime, anywhere but also ensure protection of its valuable asset. TMS provides on-demand reading, load profile, energy profile & power quality parameters at pre-defined time intervals. Besides, it has a dedicated events & alarms management module which not only provides immediate notifications over SMS, email and application but also statistical analysis of abnormities being recorded over a larger period of time.
Project Beneficiaries
Right now, this system is installed in four DISCOs of Punjab including LESCO, FESCO, GEPCO & IESCO for more than a year and all of the consumers are fully satisfied by its performance as it has saved their precious asset under fault conditions many times.
Other than being an orthodox monitoring and protection device, TMS provides a huge amount of thought-provoking data which is not possible to fetch in absence of 24/7 monitoring and reporting. This information helps power utility in critical decision making to further improve its distribution network, power quality and customer satisfaction. For example balancing of voltage and load among all phases, up-gradation of transformer or installation of capacitor banks etc.
Moreover, as the TMS unit is equipped with remotely operated MCCB, it can also be used for load management purposes. Instead of tripping entire feeder, which reduces efficiency of the system, utility can observe partial blackout at transformer level.
